OSF HealthCare Physicians Share Their Experience With Exo Works™

OSF HealthCare physicians recently shared their experience in helping bring Exo Works™ to market. Read the full article here.

In the article, OSF HealthCare explains an industry-wide challenge: while using cutting-edge point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) devices enables better patient care, lack of an ideal “at the bedside” workflow has prevented widespread adoption and has led to undocumented and non-billable ultrasounds.

“Over a year, data showed that 724 beside ultrasounds were performed at OSF HealthCare Saint Francis Medical Center,” said Nick Cohen, a project manager with Integrated Solutions Deployment for OSF. “However, only four of those were moved to a final status.” This lack of billing completion equates to a significant loss of revenue for the medical center.

“This isn’t something doctors want to worry about while they are trying to save someone’s life,” said John Wipfler, MD, an attending emergency physician at OSF HealthCare Saint Francis Medical Center, commenting on the burdensome POCUS workflow steps emergency physicians tend to encounter. “We want to use the tool to diagnose and treat someone as soon as possible. We can’t wait for an order to go through.”

With expertise from OSF emergency department physicians like Dr. Wipfler and the OSF IT department, as well as key opinion leaders at other institutions, Exo has since honed the creation of Exo Works™, a point-of-care ultrasound workflow solution that streamlines image documentation, billing, quality assurance and credentialing all in one platform. The software can be used with virtually any ultrasound device, PACS and EMR, and works on both mobile devices and desktops. Read Exo’s announcement here.

The collaboration of Exo Works has helped OSF realize just how impactful an efficient POCUS solution could be at their location. OSF is excited to continue working with Exo to revolutionize the use of POCUS. “It was neat to work with smart and dedicated people on a solution I believe will remove barriers for physicians using ultrasound in the ED,” said Dr. Wipfler. “This was also an opportunity for me to contribute to a product that will help improve outcomes for our patients.”
